A Celebration of 20 Years

Posted onLeave a commentCategoriesUncategorized

Davidson Housing Coalition is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Board and staff members recently looked back over the last 20 years to reflect and remind ourselves of the importance of our work as we embark upon our third annual summer campaign. You can view a video with highlights of our 20 years here.

Davidson Housing Coalition’s Executive Director (and founding board member) Marcia Webster claims that the strength of DHC is that it was created as a grassroots effort by a group of Davidson citizens. These citizens were concerned about the lack of affordable housing for lower wealth residents at a time when real estate prices had started to skyrocket in Davidson. In June of 1996, the group started meeting and soon thereafter formed a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit. Those early efforts 20 years ago have grown into a nonprofit that has developed and acquired 58 units of affordable rental housing and 25 land lease houses. Additionally, DHC supplements affordable housing with a continuum of services that can assist our community’s very low- to moderate-income individuals and families with the goal of financial security. These services include Financial Literacy counseling, Homebuyer Education workshops, and CARE3 (Community Access to Resources that Engage, Empower, Employ) job search services. All of these programs and the HAMMERS emergency repair program arose out of needs in our community.

Thank you to all who have supported DHC over the years! We owe much of our success to this supportive community.

Carrburrito’s has been a welcome addition to the Davidson dining scene since it opened in early 2013. Everything, from the daily specials to the homemade salsas to the crazy margarita combinations, is fresh. Doug and Edie Surratt recognized the gap in dining options and thought that the Carrburrito’s concept might be able to fill the hole in the town’s dining scene. The name Carrburrito’s hails from the restaurant’s first location, in Carrboro, NC, owned by Edie’s sister, Gail, and brother-in-law, Bill Fairbanks. The four all own the Davidson location, but Edie and Doug are the ones with local ties. The couple has lived in the Lake Norman area for 20 years and both Edie and Doug are active members of the community. Edie works at Davidson’s own classical music radio station, WDAV, and Doug owns a healthcare consulting firm in downtown Davidson.

Since opening in 2013, the restaurant has attracted both college students and Davidson residents alike. The fare is Mexican-inspired and the menu boasts burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and tostadas with a variety of fillings to choose from. Freshly made salsas and sides are necessary to round out the meal here. Carrburrito’s also has a patio dining area and a lively bar area with a large selection of house made margaritas, sangria, and beer. The restaurant not only serves great food but has become a community gathering spot.

Thank you, Carrburrito’s, for your continuing supporting of Davidson Housing Coalition!

Total Bond

TotalBond Veterinary Hospital opened its Davidson location in 1999. Locally founded, owned, and operated, TotalBond strives to provide compassionate and progressive medical care for pets and unsurpassed personal service for their owners. They understand the special bond between a pet and its owner and take this into consideration while treating pets. The proprietor of the Davidson location, Dick Hay, is a vital part of the Davidson community; he graduated from Davidson College and has lived here with his family since 1989. DHC is proud to have had Dick on the Board of Directors for the last 8+ years.

The TotalBond Veterinary Hospital at Davidson is just one location of a partnership of 5 veterinary hospitals, with locations in Lake Wylie, Charlotte, and Gastonia.  TotalBond prides itself on having only a few doctors in each location; this establishes a more complete care model in which the doctors have more of a one-on-one relationship with the pets that they care for.  Veterinarians employ the latest innovative treatments (including integrative medicine that incorporates Eastern as well as Western medicine), but with a more hands-on approach that involves the client in the decision making process on how to treat their pets for the best overall results.  All locations serve as full service hospitals that offer surgery and medical treatments, as well as some boarding and in some locations, select grooming services.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Davidson Housing Coalition!
