We all have experienced the unexpected home repair – a leaky roof, an electrical issue, or an unfixable appliance. We can consider ourselves fortunate when it’s easy to call in a service provider, confident that we can cover the expense of the repair we need. As prices continue to rise, such repair costs are often out of reach for our neighbors who manage with low fixed incomes or whose wages leave them in the lower end of the income spectrum,.

Reaching back to 2005, DHC has endeavored to offer home repair services at little or no cost to ensure that affordable homes stay affordable for their owners. When the COVID pandemic shut down the single fundraising event that powered our HAMMERS program, we put the program on hold.

Today, in partnership with Davidson’s faith community, DHC is again able to offer a home repair program for our neighbors. Launched with a single, pilot project in 2025, Neighbors’ Hands, brings skilled volunteer teams together with homeowners to assess a home’s needs, determine and schedule a scope of work, and work together to complete necessary repairs, add safety features, and in some limited cases, help renew flooring, painting, and other routine maintenance tasks that keep a home safe, attractive, and functional.  (Note: Our repair efforts are currently limited to owner-occupied home in Davidson.) Generous grant support from St. Albans Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, and Canopy Housing Foundation are enabling us to continue growing the program.

DHC gives priority in providing repair services to homeowners who are elderly, disabled, single parents, or large households of five or more residents, including children. The projects we undertake address accessibility issues, drywall and painting, and simple plumbing and carpentry issues. Please email us using the link at right to inquire about our services.
